Kenyan Movie ‘Plan B’ Gets Raving Reviews

Sarah Hassan, Catherine Kamau Karanja, well known as ‘Kate Actress’ and Nigerian actor Daniel Ettim Effiong star in this romantic comedy film and it is nothing short of fireworks. The movie was set to be released on Valentine’s day but it premiered a day before on local TV as well as on YouTube.

The premise of ‘Plan B’ is about Lisa (Sarah Hassan), who gets paged after a post-breakup one night stand. The father of the child is apparently a wealthy and mysterious Nigerian CEO, who doesn’t want to pony up or take responsibility for the child. Joyce (Kate Actress), Lisa’s friend and lawyer, comes up with the perfect scheme to out-manoeuvre Daniel but he’s far smarter than he appears and things almost end in shambles.

The movie was a collaboration between Nigerian director Lowla Dee, who has directed ‘This is It’ which stars Nick Mutuma, and Sarah Hassan’s Alfajiri Productions. Lowla Dee talked about working with the two popular Kenyan actresses saying, “These two (Hassan and Kate) are genuinely two of the best actresses in Kenya… And they are so professional – they gave this movie their all. It’s very refreshing to see central actresses not competing with each other but working together towards a common goal. I felt like that was one of the most beautiful things in the film.”

Kenya Buzz has described the movie as having been carefully thought and balanced,

“The 60-minute Valentines special showcases pure curation of art that is carefully thought out by the director LowlaDee… The film has a fine balance of humour and melancholy.”

The Daily Nation also had positive things to say about it, writing,

“It was relatable, with creative twists… Halfway into the movie, when the characters are trying to resolve a dilemma, it starts becoming increasingly and disappointingly predictable. But the laughter and pun turn it into an entertaining film.”

The film will be available on Showmax from March. In the meantime, you can watch the full movie here;
