As if we ever had a doubt! Trevor Noah is laughing all the way to the bank- If I tell you the number of times I’ve seen this headline on other articles! But, it does pass down the message; humour, done the right way, pays.
Forbes just announced that Trevor Noah is the 4th highest-paid comedian in the world, with earnings amounting to $28 million (Ksh 2.8 billion). This means that by default, he is Africa’s highest-paid comedian. The Forbes report is an estimate from earnings made between June 1, 2018, to June 1, 2019.
Wondering who made the top 3? Kevin Hart, Jerry Seinfield and Jim Gaffigan.
Let’s not forget that Trevor Noah’s contract on the satirical Daily Show was extended till 2022 and he published a very successful book, Born a Crime (that every serious book hobbyist has read). The book will be made into a film with our very own Lupita Nyong’o securing a role. We can’t wait for this one!
Kenya’s comedy scene might not be as vibrant or as ‘advanced’ as that of South Africa that launched Trevor’s career, but our comedians are still making money. Daniel Ndambuki aka Churchill is still Kenya’s highest-paid comedian given the gigs he gets and the events he hosts.
On the Forbes list, only Amy Schumer made it to the top 10 cut, landing at number 7. Is it that women are still underpaid or is she the only funny woman out there?
