Nadia Mukami and Sauti Sol for BET Awards 2020; Breaking Down The Facts

We love reporting great news! Nadia Mukami and Sauti Sol have been considered for nominations for this year’s BET Awards. Their names are in for the round one nominations under the ‘Best International Act’ category. What does this mean? There is a final list that still needs to be approved. It’s safe to say I doubt there will be more Kenyans on the list so hopefully, Nadia Mukami and Sauti Sol will make the final cut.

The news was confirmed by media personality Shaffie Weru, who’s a BET Awards Academy member representing East Africa.

It’s worth noting that no Kenyan artist has been nominated for the BET Awards since 2015. Camp Mulla was the first Kenyan band to be nominated for the BET Awards in 2012 with Sauti Sol clinching a nomination in 2015. This will be Sauti Sol’s second nomination. West African and South African artists have always dominated the BET Awards nominations list. It kind of makes sense because the entertainment industry in those two regions is bigger than ours, with more acts getting global recognition. In East Africa, Diamond Platnumz has been the biggest musical export.

BET Awards created the Best International Act-Africa category in 2010 with Wizkid holding the most wins (2) and nominations (4). This category was later merged with the Best International Act-Europe/UK so now it’s just ‘Best International Act’ category. This means our Kenyan stars are up against some tough competition in this category.

Nadia Mukami is getting her first U.S based award nomination, even though it is technically a consideration. Sauti Sol has been there before with other major award nominations.

Why does a U.S based award nomination carry more weight? The recognition Nadia Mukami will get is astronomical. It will do a lot of good for her PR and with strategic aligning, she could very well be our next big export after Sauti Sol.

Nadia Mukami is currently under Sevens Creative Hub management while Sauti Sol is under Universal Music Group.

Prior to the BET  awards gala, there’s usually a 3-day festival in Atlanta, USA that has been cancelled due to the pandemic. The BET Awards will officially take place on Sunday, June 28 via a virtual ceremony.

It can only get better from here for Nadia and Sauti Sol.
